An adapted seed drill for successful seeding
Seeding is a key stage in the cultivation process. The choice of seeds, the establishment date, the seeding depth, the spacing between rows, the type of seed drill and precise settings are all decisive criteria that impact the harvest yield and final quality.
What seeding factors are decisive for the success of your crops?
The main objective of seeding is to precisely dose and position the seeds in the soil. The seeding depth, linked to the type of seed planted and the soil conditions encountered, influences seed germination and plant root development. It must be regular to ensure uniform emergence and to facilitate post-emergence operations, namely the management of weeds, pests and diseases. Good quality furrow closure and consolidation of the seeding lines promotes soil/seed contact. Young plants will thus be able to easily draw the nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc.) and water necessary for their development, from the soil. Appropriate spacing between the rows makes it possible to limit competition phenomena, facilitate inter-row hoeing or cover the soil more quickly and thus optimize yield.
How to choose a seed drill?
Each region of the world has different climatic conditions and soils. Farmers adapt their practices and the crops established to the conditions encountered, while choosing tools appropriate for their soil. Hence, KUHN offers a wide range of seed drills to meet everyone's needs.
Depending on the type of seed: seed drills or precision drills
Seed drills
Seed drills allow seeding cereals, legumes or fodder crops. Seeds are distributed regularly and continuously along the seeding row. The use of additional hoppers, SH, offers an efficient and cost-effective solution for broadcast seeding of plant cover for example.
Precision seed drills
Precision seed drills are intended for growing corn, sorghum, beet, sunflower, rapeseed and soybeans. The seeds are delivered individually at precise and regular intervals.
Depending on the type of distribution: mechanical or pneumatic seed drills
Mechanical seed drills
Seed distribution is done by gravity.
Pneumatic seed drills
Seed transfer is ensured by air flow in feeding tubes, transporting the seeds to the seeding units.
Depending on the seeding method used: seeding combinations, for min-till or direct seeding
Seed drills for conventional seeding
Seed drills intended for conventional seeding allow work on ploughed or tilled soils as with PLANTER 3 and KOSMA precision seed drills. Conventional seed drills can be combined with a power harrow to prepare the seedbed and sow in a single pass directly after ploughing. Hence, KUHN offers integrated seeding combinations mechanical SITERA or pneumatic VENTA as well as foldable models with a front hopper HR RCS + BTFR and HR RCS + KOMSA CSM.
Min-till seed drills
Min-till cultivation techniques, which appeared in the 1960s in the United States, continue to develop. Their aim is to limit soil erosion, preserve its microbiological activity and reduce establishment costs. The seeds are thus sown after stubble cultivation. In this perspective, the KUHN range of min-till seed drills offers several models such as the disc seed drill ESPRO, tine seed drill MEGANT and MAXIMA 3 precision seed drill.
Depending on conditions: seed drills with discs, tines or Suffolk coulters
When purchasing a seed drill, selecting the seeding units is of utmost importance and depends on the working conditions.
Seed drills with discs
The discs provide a very regular seeding depth and are particularly effective in the presence of residues. These seed drills are suitable for a wide variety of soils and cultivation methods. Depending on the discs used, they can work after stubble cultivation, ploughing, shallow tillage or even directly.
Seed drills with tines
The tines have excellent penetration capacity, even in poorly worked or stony soils. These seed drills, capable of working in hard or wet soils, offer the possibility of seeding earlier or later in the season. Some seed drills are also equipped with opener discs facilitating work when practicing minimum tillage.
Seed drills with Suffolk coulters
Suffolk coulters are recommended in very clayey and/or sticky soils and promote the supply of air into the soil. They allow you to continue seeding even in extreme or very humid conditions.
KUHN seed drills: an innovative answer to agricultural challenges and issues
The increase in the world population and the challenges related to climate change are guiding the evolution of cultivation practices throughout the world. Regardless in which part of the world, the objective is common: to produce more, while preserving resources and limiting establishment costs. KUHN thus responds to these challenges by offering seed drills which are:
Fast and of large width: perfectly suited to large-scale farming operations and contractors thanks to their high work output.
Versatile with tools capable of seeding several varieties at different depths.
Designed for precision farming: automatic seeding start and stop by GPS (section control), independent application rate modulation of seeds and fertilizer in relation to the soil potential through a prescription map, possibility of transferring data to the farm software via Agrirouter… So many solutions already available on a wide range of KUHN seed drills.
