KUHN offers a wide range of mounted and trailed orchard and vineyard sprayers

KUHN’s range of orchard and vineyard sprayers comes in two categories.

Firstly, tractor mounted sprayers, made for compact tractors (15 to 60 hp), provide 300 to 600 litres of autonomy. These sprayers are ideal for smaller farms.

Secondly, trailed sprayers are designed for more power (50 to 100 hp), have large-volume tanks (1,000, 1,500, 2,000, or 3,000 L), and a carrying frame with an axle. These sprayers can apply crop-protection products over very large surface areas.

The importance of air volume

Air acts as a vector which transports droplets from the spout to the trees’ foliage. It also increases leaf movement, allowing the crop protection products to penetrate the tree or vine more deeply. A sufficient and consistent volume of air is essential to ensuring high-quality distribution.

Spraying height and width are directly related to air volume, as is ground speed. Increasing the air volume can increase one or more of these parameters to achieve optimal performance.

The air volume on the crop sprayer can be adjusted directly by changing gears. For example, depending on the growth stage, it can be adjusted to match the density of foliage.

Two air-suction techniques for vineyard and orchard sprayers

There are two main suction techniques: front and rear suction. The methods have distinct features that influence treatment efficiency and precision. Different sprayer models have different characteristics: ANTIS, ANTIS M 2 and ANTIS 2 sprayers come with a front-suction system, while the other models are equipped with a rear system.

Rear suction: high work output

Sprayers with rear-suction systems have high suction capacity, generating high airflow. For example, the new HF fan with patented wave blades can deliver an air volume of 95,730 m3/h. The patented design of the HF fan can generate up to 20% higher airflow than standard fans.

This feature improves product distribution by allowing spray drift to occur more widely and at higher levels, as well as increasing work output. It is particularly beneficial for machines with round fans, where it maximises performance.

Front suction: protection and efficiency

Front air suction helps protect operators from exposure to the product being applied. If any product drifts toward the front of the sprayer, it is sucked in by the fan. The design of front-suction fans also prevents the drawing in of ground debris, such as leaves, weeds, and cut grass. As a result, there’s no risk of fan blockage, so airflow and air volume are constant throughout the operation. High air flow is unnecessary for V-shaped fans, as they are designed for close-range operations.

Several fan versions are available

KUHN’s different sprayer models are available with three types of fan: round (GEO, GEO M, PDF 2, GEO M 2, GEO 2, ANTIS M 2 and ANTIS 2), V-shape (ANTIS, PDF 2, ANTIS M 2 and ANTIS 2) or with direction-adjustable hands (OKTOPUS). Each design is tailored to specific needs, delivering maximum efficiency for all your requirements.

Round fans for efficiency and versatility

Round fans have great benefits. They generate powerful airflow, enabling them to cover greater distances and treat tall crops and trees effectively. Their versatility and high performance are perfect for covering large areas and handling a variety of tree types.

V-shaped fans for precise applications

V-shaped fans are designed for close-range operations around trees. They direct airflow straight to the plants, ensuring precise and uniform coverage, and are perfect for applications that require localised treatment. The design and front-suction system minimise product loss and improve treatment efficiency.

Precision with mounted nozzles

The direction-adjustable hands are precise and flexible. With independent airflow and spraying, distribution is uniform and perfectly controlled. The removable nozzle, mounted on an adjustable holder, ensures optimum droplet formation and targeted spraying. In combination with directional, adjustable airflow, this system delivers effective, precise coverage.

Choose robust and efficient pumps

Pumps play an essential role in agricultural spraying. They need to have high capacities to ensure steady and constant flow rates, including during intensive jobs. In general, they are made of robust materials to resist corrosion and plant protection products. KUHN offers brass versions of certain sprayers, which can make them more durable and reliable. The combination of efficiency and resistance helps maintain excellent output while reducing maintenance requirements. It is a major factor in terms of an agricultural tool’s service life.

Regulations for precision applications

Different regulatory systems in the sprayers for orchards and vineyards directly affect spraying precision. For instance, DPME regulation (Flow rate proportional to engine speed (electric)), like the DPM system (Flow rate proportional to engine speed) adjusts the rate in line with engine speed. This means that product distribution adapts to variations in speed. However, a certain speed is necessary to ensure the desired application rate. With this type of regulation, users can adjust pressure electrically, from an in-cab control box, to adapt speed to any situation.

DPAE regulation (Flow rate proportional to ground speed (Electronic)) is higher tech. It adjusts the rate automatically in line with the tractor’s ground speed to ensure uniform product application at any speed. The system can be controlled using a dedicated control box or integrated into an ISOBUS terminal (as an option). This makes it possible to use precision functions such as automatic section shut-off at headlands. These technologies contribute to optimising precision, reducing product loss, and enhancing the quality of crop-protection treatments.

FAQ

What are the basic principles of spraying in vineyards and orchards?

The process begins with the machinery forming fine droplets, which are then moved toward the crop canopy by the airflow generated by the fan. This airflow moves droplets through foliage for deep penetration, even coverage, and effective protection against pests and diseases. Air volume must be sufficient and adjustable to adapt to crop needs, affecting height, width, and working speed.

What is the difference between front air suction and rear air suction?
Rear air suction (PDF2, GEO M2, GEO2):

Maximises work output by generating very high airflow (up to 95,730 m³/h)

  • Improves distribution and coverage
  • Suitable for wide and tall crops

Front air suction (ANTIS M2, ANTIS 2):

  • Protects the operator by sucking drifting product toward the fan
  • Prevents debris ingestion (leaves, grass)
  • Keeps airflow stable with no fan blockage risk

What types of fans are available on KUHN sprayers?
